The short version

1. What we collect and why

Your account

When you sign up with Apple, Google or an email and password, our sign-in provider (Google Firebase Authentication) creates an account for you.

Your profile

You give us this information during setup and in Settings. It is saved to your account so Terry can suggest a step goal, remind you to walk and restore your settings on a new device.

Other Terry users can't see your profile, except your display name and username, which appear on your friend card if you use Friends. Your height, weight and birthday are never shown to friends. We access your profile only when needed to run, secure or support Terry, or when the law requires.

Your username

Your username is how friends find you. Anyone, including people without the app, can check whether a username exists and see the random account ID it belongs to, which gives no access to your account by itself. To stop new friend requests, turn off "Let people find me by @username" in "What friends see" (see "Friends sharing" in section 7). Your username is part of your invite link (walkwithterry.web.app/u/yourname), so anyone you send that link to can see it.

Apple Health data

With your permission, Terry reads these from Apple Health:

Terry uses them to show your progress, to change Terry's shape, to run your Live Activity and to count streaks and personal records. While your Live Activity or step sharing with friends is on, Terry checks for new steps in the background at most about once an hour.

Terry only reads. It never writes anything to Apple Health.

What stays on your iPhone: your step history, distance, exercise minutes, personal records and streaks.

What can leave your iPhone (only once you add a friend, see "Friends" below):

See section 3 for our health data promises.

Friends

Friends is optional. Nothing is shared until you send a friend request or accept one: adding a friend is your choice to share with them. Terry tells you what friends see right where you send or accept a request, and the "What friends see" screen lists it in full. Sharing today's steps is on from then until you turn it off, and you can stop sharing with friends completely at any time (section 7).

When you use Friends we store:

We check names, usernames and cheer messages against a list of blocked words, both in the app and on our servers.

Notes and photos

You can add a note to a day: text (up to 500 characters), how the walk felt and up to 4 photos. Other users, including your friends, can never see your notes and photos. We access them only when needed to run, secure or support Terry, or when the law requires.

You pick photos with Apple's photo picker, so Terry never gets access to your whole photo library. Before upload, Terry makes a new copy of the photo that leaves out location and other hidden details (metadata). Our servers then make smaller versions and remove any remaining metadata.

Notifications

Live Activities

Your Live Activity (today's steps, goal, streak and countdown) is built on your iPhone. It shows on your Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island, where anyone holding your phone can see it. The "Terry only" style shows Terry's mood and a progress bar instead of numbers.

So Terry can still join you at walk time when you haven't opened it for a while, while Live Activity and your walk reminder are on, your iPhone sends our server (Google Firebase) the times of your next walk cards, for up to 7 days after you last opened Terry, and what each card starts with: your daily goal, the Lock Screen style, Terry's greeting and the countdown to midnight. It never sends your steps or your streak; the card shows 0 steps until Terry updates it on your iPhone. If you reach your goal before walk time, your iPhone takes that day's card off the list, so our server can tell that you reached your goal that day. It also sends your account ID, Live Activity and Firebase push tokens and a random ID for your install, so Apple can start the card at walk time and end it at midnight even when Terry is closed. Turning Live Activity, the walk reminder or notifications off, signing out or deleting your account deletes them; otherwise they are deleted 30 days after you last opened Terry. Only the iPhone you used last gets these cards.

Purchases (Terry+)

Apple handles all payments. We never see your card or payment details.

We use RevenueCat to check whether you have Terry+. RevenueCat receives your purchase and renewal records from Apple, your account ID (after you sign in; a random ID before that) and your random analytics ID (see below), so we can understand which plans people buy.

As with any internet connection, Google (Firebase) and RevenueCat also receive your IP address and basic device and app details when Terry connects to them.

Analytics and crash reports

We use PostHog to understand how Terry is used and to find bugs. Analytics use a random ID instead of your name, email, username or account ID, and the app never sends those to PostHog. Because RevenueCat stores that random ID with your account ID for purchase records (see Purchases), analytics are pseudonymous, not fully anonymous.

PostHog receives:

We never send health data, notes, photos, messages or your profile details to analytics. The only text you write that reaches PostHog is feedback you choose to send (see Feedback form). Terry also asks PostHog which features are switched on (for example, whether Friends is available), using the same random ID.

Your analytics ID is shared with RevenueCat (see Purchases), even when "Share usage data" is off. RevenueCat sends purchase events, such as plan, price, trials and renewals, to PostHog under your analytics ID, and these events can include RevenueCat's customer ID, which is your account ID.

Turn it off: Settings > Privacy > Data & privacy > "Share usage data" (in version 1.0.0, Settings > Privacy > "Share usage data"). This stops analytics, crash reports and feature exposure events from the app. Terry still downloads feature switches from PostHog, which sends your random ID and IP address but no usage events. It does not stop the purchase records Apple and RevenueCat keep, or the purchase events RevenueCat sends. Signing out gives you a new random analytics ID.

Device checks

Terry uses Firebase App Check with Apple's App Attest and DeviceCheck to prove that requests come from the real app. This sends a device check to Apple and Google. It does not include your personal details.

Feedback form

If you send feedback in Terry, the reasons you picked, your message (up to 1,000 characters) and the time go to PostHog as a survey response under your random analytics ID, not your account ID. If "Share usage data" is off, Terry opens an email to us instead (see Emails to us). Version 1.0.0 stored feedback in our database without your account ID. Please do not put personal details in your message.

Emails to us

If you email us, we receive your email address and whatever you write. We use it to reply and to improve Terry.

Invite page

The invite page at walkwithterry.web.app has no cookies, no analytics and no tracking. It reads the username from the link in your browser. It is hosted on Firebase Hosting (Google), which processes your IP address and browser details to deliver the page. The page tells your browser not to send its address to other sites.

7. Your choices

8. Your rights where you live

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:

Most of this you can do yourself in the app (section 7). For anything else, email dynomite.app@gmail.com. We may need to confirm your identity before we act, and we may refuse requests the law allows us to refuse. We will not treat you differently for using your rights.

EEA, UK and Switzerland. We use your data:

California and other US states. We do not sell or share personal information as those laws define it, and we do not use sensitive personal information for anything beyond providing Terry. The categories we collect are listed in section 1.

Nothing in this policy limits rights you have under the laws where you live that cannot be limited by agreement.

9. Security

We use our providers' security features, including encrypted connections, access rules that limit who can read each record, and device checks. No system is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee the security of your data. You are responsible for keeping your device and password safe. To the extent the law requires, we will tell you about a data breach that affects you.

10. Children

Terry is not directed to children under 13, or under 16 in the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom. If we learn that a user is under these ages, we will delete their account. If you believe a child has given us personal data, email dynomite.app@gmail.com and we will delete it.

11. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. We will post the new version with a new "Last updated" date. If a change is significant, we will tell you in the app or by other reasonable means. If you keep using Terry after a change takes effect, the updated policy applies. Where the law requires your consent to a change, we will ask for it.
